Adult Sailing Programs

We now have four adult classes:

  • Start Sailing Right (SSR) for people just starting to sail (information below)
  • Sailing 200 for graduates of SSR (or sailors with similar experience) who would like some practice days under the supervision of a US Sailing certified ASF Instructor (also below)
  • Introduction to Sailboat Racing for people who would like to discover that exciting part of our sport
  • Powerboat Handling and Rescue to sharpen your powerboat skills and learn how to rescue sailboaters and others
  • Adopt-a-Boat: Once you've taken Start Sailing Right and joined AYC, you can also adopt a boat for the Tempe Town Lake Sunday activities.

If you'd like to know about the fall 2008 classes, contact Rob Gibbs. Read Rob's sailing blog.

Start Sailing Right: Four classroom meetings of 2½-3 hours each and four on-the-water classes of four hours each. Students sail in Catalina (also called Capri) 14.2s, which hold two or three people. The class price is $350.

The Start Sailing Right classroom. The ASF course will build your knowledge and confidence through lectures and sailing on the protected waters of Tempe Town Lake. Topics include sailing theory, boat handling, safety, right-of-way, knots, and docking.

The instructors are US Sailing certified and have enjoyed many years on the water. Now they want to pass along to beginners some of their knowledge and experience. Classes are designed for ages 12 and older. Classes average 36 years of age, and we've had students in their 70s.

Note: You'll need to provide your own PFD (type III "life jacket") and you'll need to demonstrate that you can swim 50 yards in sailing clothes.

Introduction to Sailboat Racing. If you've ever considered crewing or competing in a sailboat regatta, learn what it takes through this introductory course. Two classroom sessions and two on-the-water sessions will prepare you for some competitive sailing action. Click on the link for more information.

ASF also has available one-on-one coaching. Please call Rob Gibbs (602.574.3000) to discuss your experience and the kind of coaching you'd like.

Here is the ASF Calendar.
