Women's Sailing

The Ruth Beals Cup players

Barbara Tingom took the Ruth Beals Cup trophy home again in 2007 as the winner of the nearly-annual regatta at Tempe Town Lake. Nearly? The event had to be canceled in 2006 after two days of nasty weather prevented its running.

Both the wind and turnout were light for this event, but we're contemplating improved promotion for the 2008 version. Watch this space.

The regatta is the brainchild of Marilyn Moyer-Ward, who describes the first Ruth Beals Cup races in 2005:

Saturday, November 12, 2005 was a beautiful fall day in Tempe, sunny and 75 degrees with a bit of a breeze. It was a perfect day to run the inaugural Ruth Racing was close for the Ruth Beals CupBeals Cup Regatta on Tempe Town Lake, celebrating women’s sailing in Arizona.

The idea for a women’s regatta came to me after a visit last year to my Lake Erie yacht club, North Cape Yacht Club (NCYC). I had participated in the Irene Race many years ago with Jamie Matuszak and her crew as a novice sailor (we won!). The competition and camaraderie of that day impressed me and it was something I wanted to recreate here.

Naming this race for our founder, Ruth Beals Inscho, seemed a perfect match. The Arizona Yacht Club was Ruth’s brainchild when she was the first sailboat dealer in Arizona.

We turned out 17 sailors for the regatta, ranging from 8 years old into retirement, sailing seven Capri 14.2s. Two crews brought their own boats and the rest used five of the AYC/ASF sailboats.

Barb Tingom and Joyce Wieler finished in front, Barb’s sailing skills and knowledge of Tempe Town LakeContestants in the Ruth Beals Cup catapulting her to bullets in three races. A very decisive win!

The very best part of the day was having Ruth herself there. It was an honor to meet and speak with her. She brought along her family, Maggie, Jim, Sue and Terry, a beautiful and fun group. We presented her with an Honorary Membership to the Arizona Yacht Club and a replica of the new Ruth Beals perpetual trophy.

To wrap up this great day, Mike Ferring and Kyle Clark took Ruth sailing and she told them, “This is just perfect. What a wonderful day.” And her smile when returning to the dock was priceless.

Many thanks to my co-chair, Wendy Larsen, for getting this effort underway and allowing me to pick it up midway. We had an experienced Race Committee in Mike Ferring (PRO), David Rawstrom, George Tingom, Roger Butterwick, Wade McDaniel, Dennis Martinelli, and Sue Painter.
