Catalina Island Cruise
Each year, AYC joins the Santa
Monica Windjammers Yacht Club for a weekend at beautiful Santa Catalina
island, just off the coast of Los Angeles. Besides a nice sail, there
are lots of social events to float your boat.
The annual fun week of ocean sailing will conclude with a rendezvous
with the Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club at Two Harbors, Catalina
Island on July 11-13. Gene Carapetyan first organized this cruise in 1977 to top off the Marina
del Rey to San Diego race and cruise back up the coast.
On Friday night there's a potluck with hot coals provided.
The traditional two-out-of-three competition consisting of horseshoes,
boat race and volleyball takes place on Saturday. Past boating races have
been in Sabots, sea kayaks and dinghies with team-constructed garbage-bag
sails. AYC was able to muster a win the last two years and give back the buffalo
head trophy to the SMWYC. Yes, you read that right; you lose the trophy
by winning. The trophy is inscribed: "We lost more events than they
did!" Saturday afternoon ends with a BBQ hosted by the SMWYC.
Reservations, boat registration and proof of insurance are needed if
you want a slip at SMWYC before or after the cruise. Contact Cruising

Motor sail from Marina del Rey to Catalina, dinner ashore at the Harbor
Reef restaurant
0600hrs Depart for Two Harbors, nap in afternoon
Friday, July 6 :
Lazy day, meet at the Beach Bandstand. Practice Horseshoes and Volleyball
in preparation for Saturday's big tournaments. Cocktails at the Harbor
Reef bar, dinner will be a bring-your-own potluck at the Bandstand. We'll
supply the hot coals. RSVP.
Saturday, July 7:
Meet at the Beach Bandstand, lots of refreshments and activities planned,
including:
1200hrs Horseshoe Tournament
1300hrs Volleyball Tournament
1500hrs Commodore's Dinghy/Kayak Race - watch the "match race"
between SMWYC and Arizona YC Commodores
1800hrs Barbecue dinner at the bandstand - steak, baked potato, salad,
beer, wine and soft drinks, all for the unbelievable price of $25! Presentation
of "We lost more events than you did" perpetual trophy ("won"
by AYC in 2002!)
2100hrs Dancing and adult refreshments at the Harbor Reef Bar
Sunday, July 8 :
0800hrs Early departure for Marina del Rey
1000hrs Depart for Marina del Rey
1600hrs Depart for Phoenix or spend night in slip (RSVP required)

boat name, boat length, arrival and departure dates. The maximum cost is $15/night if slips are full,
